Pope Residential Schools Kamloops

Pope's address of residential schools falls short, no mention of survivors: Advocate KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) — Local religious leader says Pope’s comments over the discovery of 215 Indigenous children remains at church-run residential schools fell short. Pope Francis on Sunday expressed grief but didn’t offer an apology this weekend. During his regular Sunday public prayer delivered to a gathering in St. Peter’s Square, Francis said he was “following with sorrow” the news of an unmarked burial site brought. He added the “shocking” discovery is a call for Canadian religious and political authorities to keep working toward reconciliation. Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne is the executive director at First United Church Ministry Society on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and a member of the Heiltsuk First Nation. She says his address does not meet the needs of the survivors, who are the ones asking for the apology. Lansdowne says she understands he met with a pair of Canadian Cardinals on Saturday as pressure mounts for the Catholic Church to take action and accept responsibility for the residential school system that targeted Indigenous children for decades. However, his attempt to address the issue has also come too late and didn’t even mention survivors. “I join with the Catholic church in Canada in expressing closeness to the Canadian people traumatized by the shocking news,” Francis said. “This sad discovery increases the awareness of the sorrows and sufferings of the past.” “He’s expressing closeness to the Canadian people,” Lansdowne says. “It’s very clear that Canadian residential schools victimized and traumatized generations of Indigenous children and families, and that’s never acknowledged in anything that he’s released today.” “Regardless of whether or not it’s an admission of liability, I do think that restitution is owed from the Roman Catholic Church to the survivors,” she adds. In 2009, then Pope Benedict XVI met with former students and survivors and told them of his “personal anguish” over their suffering. But his words weren’t described as an apology. Lansdowne says the United Church has taken accountability and is committed to the full implementation of all of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “I’m personally as an Indigenous ordained minister, wanting us to see to see each other go further,” she says. “This is still living history for us. The last residential school closed when I was in third-year university, and I’m only 45. This is the living history and the living legacy of residential schools and assimilation of policy that was meant to eradicate Indigenous people from Canadian society. And every Canadian has to come to terms with that.” In 2009, then Pope Benedict XVI met with former students and survivors and told them of his “personal anguish” over their suffering. But his words weren’t described as an apology. The Kamloops Indian Residential School was Canada’s largest such facility and was operated by the Catholic Church between 1890 and 1969. Chief Rosanne Casimir of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation in British Columbia has said her nation wants a public apology from the Catholic Church. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, which ran nearly half of Canada’s residential schools, has yet to release any records about the Kamloops school, she also said. The United, Presbyterian and Anglican churches have apologized for their roles in the abuse, as has the Canadian government, which has offered compensation. Among the many recommendations of a government-established Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a papal apology. Source:-https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/06/06/pope-residential-schools-kamloops/

Group plans 9-11 event

With 100 days remaining until the 20th anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, local officials are ramping up efforts for a special ceremony to honor those who gave their all. Plans were announced Thursday at a press conference held at the Jaffa Shrine Center for a Remember 9/11 ceremony, which is being organized by a committee made up of members of the community. The event, planned for September, aims to embrace the principles of faith, patriotism, and civic pride. “We are remembering the precious lives that were lost, celebrating the American spirit and once again recognizing first responders who serve our community,” committee member Tony DeGol said. The commemoration ceremony is set to be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Jaffa Shrine Center. The event will be the third commemoration the Jaffa Shrine Center has hosted since 2001, with previous events held in 2006 and 2016. “Those first responders were heroes, and every one of us recognizes that,” Blair County President Commissioner Bruce Erb said. “We are so grateful to them for their brave and selfless service.” Project organizers said the commemoration will remember not only those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 but how America bonded together in a time of peril. Pastor Gary Dull, who is a co-chair of the event committee, said he is hoping the event will spark a sense of “greater unity across America” that he believes has been lost. “Let’s use this as an opportunity to teach younger generations of the sorrow of that tragic day so that for the sake of our prosperity, they will unite with other races, creeds, and political parties to make America a nation that will stand strong for faith, patriotism and civic pride for many years to come,” he said. The ceremony will open with a Walk of Honor to recognize local first responders and military, who can register to participate at www.911-anniversary.weebly.com. “While none of us knows what peril awaits us as we go to work each day, these brave men and women obviously face unique risks on every call to which they respond,” DeGol said. “We stand with them.” Following the Walk of Honor, a program will take place inside the Jaffa Shrine Center and will include a virtual welcome video from Pittsburgh Steelers and Hall of Fame running back Rocky Bleier. The program’s keynote speaker will be James O’Brien, who served as a former Deputy Director of Operational Tests and Evaluation for the United States government. He served 15 years in the Pentagon and was inside the building during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, program producer Pam Etters said. The program will include performances from the Altoona Community Band, Altoona Youth Orchestra, Hollidaysburg Community Chorus, the Jaffa Highlanders and other local musicians. Committee member Duane Bordell said 3,200 tickets will be available at no charge starting Aug. 2, and the tickets will be distributed at 11 local locations, including the Jaffa Shrine Center. “We’ve been working very hard to put this together, and we hope to have all 3,200 seats filled,” Bordell said. Everbridge Provides Critical Event Management (CEM) Preparedness for State

Everbridge Provides Critical Event Management (CEM) Preparedness for State and Local Governments as Above-Average 2021 U.S. Hurricane Season Gets Underway As the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Predicts Another Active Atlantic Hurricane Season, Everbridge Customers Highlight Preparedness and Response Efforts Everbridge, Inc. (NASDAQ: EVBG), the global leader in critical event management ( CEM ), today announced its support for hundreds of counties and cities along the U.S. Gulf Coast and Atlantic Seaboard (from Florida to Massachusetts ) as the 2021 hurricane season gets underway. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) , the forecast for this year’s season – June 1 through November 30 – predicts “ above normal ” activity, with the likelihood of up to 20 named storms, six to ten of which could become hurricanes. NOAA forecasts three to five of those hurricanes could rise to Category 3, 4 or 5 storms with winds of 111 mph or higher. This year’s hurricane outlook follows a record-breaking 2020 season and marks the sixth year in a row of unusually high hurricane activity. “When hurricanes strike, communication between emergency managers, first responders, search and rescue teams, and the general population remains vital to saving lives,” said Brian Toolan, Head of Government Strategy at Everbridge. “Our team of critical event management experts stands dedicated to providing our customers with the right tools, best practices and functionality to ensure preparedness during the hurricane season, and to always maximize response and safety efforts.” With an emphasis on lessons learned from 2020 – during which 30 named storms resulted in more than $51 billion in economic losses – the Everbridge Customer Success team released new critical event management and emergency messaging recommendations, guidelines, and tips that organizations should incorporate into their hurricane readiness and preparedness plans. Levering the Everbridge Platform, cities, counties and states across the U.S. follow these best practices for effectively communicating with citizens during a crisis: Deploy a population-wide opt-in means for the public to receive critical updates and information via their mobile device – provide communities with a quick and easy-to-implement, opt-in solution for citizens to text a keyword or zip-code to an established SMS short-code. Contribute to a risk data-sharing network that connects the public sector with the private sector – enable government agencies, hospitals, universities, airports, and local businesses to share life-saving information to respond quicker to emergency situations. Execute special/functional needs registries – identify at-risk citizens during an emergency to ensure high-priority individuals (i.e., nursing homes, hospitals) receive specialized care.Create incident zones by geographic location – trigger mobile emergency alerts from government authorities when an individual travels into, or returns back to, an area designated as an active critical event. Maximize outreach with a robust database of contacts – to complement opt-in databases, emergency officials turn to the Everbridge Resident Connection database – a robust database of landline, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and cellular business and residential contacts to reach the greater population with more confidence. During the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season – further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic – many communities along the eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast utilized the Everbridge platform to communicate critical safety information to residents and employees. “We have a mission to ensure public safety, community awareness and emergency response,” said Francis Xavier Suarez, Mayor of Miami, Florida. “To uphold this commitment, we need to reach our residents as quickly and reliably as possible. Everbridge helps the city of Miami to ensure citizens and businesses have access to real-time public information when seconds count. We are well-prepared to keep our population informed leading up to, during, and beyond hurricane season.” To bolster its ongoing hurricane preparedness efforts, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) uses Everbridge to power AlertFlorida, distributing critical information to residents, businesses and visitors across the state. Interviews with six Florida counties, as well as the city of Miami, document best practices for ensuring hurricane readiness, the benefits of mutual aid assistance across counties, coordinating safe evacuations for all residents, as well as the many use cases for a scalable mass notification platform. For more information, access the Everbridge Hurricane Best Practices and Preparedness materials, including: Additionally, Everbridge will host a Severe Weather Tabletop Exercise on June 4 th , offering three pre-work independent activities leading up to the 2-hour instructor-led live sessions covering three modules: preparedness, response, and recovery. Award-Winning Bartender Darren

Award-Winning Bartender Darren Yaw Foo Hoe Launches Cocktail Curation Service in Hong Kong Fresh from his entry into the Best Bars in Asia list, Darren Yaw Foo Hoe, founder of 55 Lockhart in Wan Chai, launches a new cocktail subscription service to Hong Kong customers.  "The Covid-19 pandemic has definitely made us more creative in coming up with ideas on how to survive in this business. I'm lucky to have a supportive team behind me and we are excited for this new service," said the young up-and-coming bartender Darren Yaw Foo Hoe. The new subscription service is called Lockhart & Key. The package offers a true cocktail-in-a-box. Each month's delivery focuses on two different cocktails especially created by Darren Yaw Foo Hoe and 55 Lockhart's team, and comes with recipes and enough ingredients to make two of each for a total of four cocktails. Darren Yaw Foo Hoe is a Malaysian transplant who de-camped to Hong Kong seven years ago and learned the cocktail craft working in some of Hong Kong's top establishments such as The Diplomat and Caprice before deciding to branch out on his own. "55 Lockhart actually started out with my love of coffee. I wanted to do third-wave coffee, but at the same time I love cocktails, so I thought why not combine both?" Darren Yaw Foo Hoe explained. 55 Lockhart's coffee by day and cocktails by night is a winning combination, judging by its popularity. In a short two years since its start-up, the bar and its bartender have drawn a lot of rave reviews and respect among its peers, culminating in the inclusion on the Best Bars in Asia list. "I was blown away and I saw it as a mark of respect for what we're doing here. I didn't have any expectations at all when we started. But the support we've received shows us we're legit," said Darren Yaw Foo Hoe. The staff at 55 Lockhart treats ingredients with the utmost respect, whether its coffee beans or small-batch spirits, attracting a young crowd of cocktail lovers and caffeine fiends. "My partners and staff are multi-cultural and come from the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia. As Darren Yaw Foo Hoe, the bartender of 55 Lockhart, I've developed a reputation of someone with eclectic, diverse tastes and this is largely due to my team," he said. Darren Yaw Foo Hoe's Lockhart & Key subscription boxes also offer customers the chance to buy barware together with the cocktails for newcomers to cocktail making. He also has plans to work in collaboration with other sought-after bartenders for exclusive, limited edition subscription boxes. "I like to work with the local community here who have a similar vision and identity to me, rather than doing things on my own. I can learn from them, we learn from each other," Darren Yaw Foo Hoe explained. Asia, especially in cities like Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, is pioneering the next frontier of innovation in alcohol and spirit-slinging creativity, drawing on local ingredients and traditions combining these with Western-style blends and methods. Emerging scenes in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City are taking note and competing for notice on the global stage. Young upstarts like Darren Yaw Foo Hoe are eager to prove their mettle. "Asian bars are creating some of the most exciting cocktails in the world. The community is close knit, we have a friendly competitive spirit that drives me to do better. I'm excited about what's next for Asian spirits and bars," said Darren Yaw Foo Hoe.
